Brutuk was a known conspirator under Tuma's command during the days of Bara Magna, so it was a surprise to nobody that he was quick to gather his own splinter faction after Tuma's defeat. Dubbing his clan the Umbral Guard, Brutuk made it his mission to annex any and all rival factions with hopes of rebuilding a Skrall empire under his command.

The stability offered by the reformation of Spherus Magna was no help to Brutuk's conquest, but his plans were truly dashed when a violent encounter saw the Umbral Guard decimated and Brutuk near-fatally injured. Ever the schemer, he managed to talk his way out of certain death by entering an alliance with the Mekrona; agreeing to assist their assault on Volkerra in return for their lives.

Now with his wounds crudely fixed in the only way the Mekrona knew how, and his subordinates given access to their advanced weaponry, Brutuk is once again trapped under the leadership of another.
