BIRTH OF THE TOA VOLKA
While the harvest of mana showed positive results in the few explored regions of Volkerra, and its trade brought much wealth to Volka Nui, it inevitably made all of Volkerra a target. Being so isolated was once a deterrent for raiders and pirates, but this also made it difficult for the mainland to effectively provide support, something potential threats all across Spherus Magna were beginning to realise. Luckily for the Volkari, destiny was listening.
Talus, Nidak, Vothena, Stalakk, Axus, and Deimus were Matoran engaged in routine mana harvests, far apart in their respective regions. Normally, their dormant elemental powers would act as a guiding compass towards the elusive mana deposits, however on this day, they were inexplicably drawn elsewhere.
Gradually lured into a state of inescapable focus, each was drawn instead towards six ancient monuments hidden far beyond the reach of any Matoran. Though these structures appeared less ancient than the Vadrigan ruins, remnants of a species that dominated Volkerra thousands of years ago, they were more crucially carved from Protosteel, a metal fashioned by the Great Beings.
Upon ascending the steps of each monument, they entered small central arenas flanked by two curved obelisks. Riddled with glowing cracks and vibrating with barely contained elemental energy, the obelisks jutted out horizontally, nearly forming a large circular monument that tapered to sharp points at the top. All six monuments were identical, etched with various runes and symbols and enveloped by layers of their respective regions' biomass.
Upon reaching the central arenas, the six Matoran were snapped out of their trance, grasping only a moment to realise how far they had travelled before their lives were changed forever. The quiet was shattered by the two obelisks exploding into a blinding light.
The flare engulfed the Matoran, who violently absorbed the released energy, fuelling a painful transformation that stretched and contorted their forms. Every sense was overwhelmed, pushing them to a brink they had never known, until... silence. Upon regaining consciousness, they were no longer Matoran. Amidst fractured ground, scorched land and the scattered remains of two broken obelisks, they unsteadily returned to their feet as Toa. Destiny had led them here.
Deimus was the first to be greeted by a strange figure cautiously limping out from clouds of dust kicked up by the chaos. As the stranger approached, it revealed itself to be a frail, singe-eyed creature leaning heavily on a tall staff.
Before Deimus could fully comprehend the enormity of his transformation, the creature called out to him in a soothing yet raspy voice, quick to calm his nerves. "I am Xota" she stated, her eye shimmering with a mix of awe and urgency. "That was quite the display, I'm surprised those monuments still work at all!"
Xota explained to Deimus that she was the last of the Vadrigar. Well read on Matoran history and sciences, she was the one responsible for activating the monuments. Xota had calculated that the amount of elemental mana those obelisks contained may be enough trigger a Matoran's transformation into Toa, perhaps even call out to those destined much in the same way that a usual mana deposit does. When questioned why, her tone grew less enthusiastic. "I have forseen coming dangers," she continued, "dangers that your people are not equipped to deal with alone. I refuse to see another civilization brought to extinction here, so I felt it necessary to give destiny a nudge... so to speak."
Deimus continued to listen, reluctant to trust her word yet doubtful that she meant him harm. Xota suggested he return to Volka Nui and regroup with the others in the Hall of Chronicles, but just as he opened his mouth to ask about these "others," she vanished. He wasn't one to take a strangers advice, but returning home did seem to be a wise idea. While Deimus retraced his steps back to Volka Nui, Xota appeared before the remaining five Toa across Volkerra, explaining what she had to Deimus and sending them all on their way back to Volka Nui.
On Volka Nui, Deimus navigated to the Hall of Chronicles using back routes and underground shortcuts. Surely it would be unwise to reveal themselves to the Volkari before regrouping, he thought, after all they would be the first Toa ever to set foot on Volkerra; this should be handled with a level of prudence. Distant shouting and cheering echoed through the streets; unusual, but Deimus considered it a lucky distraction. Perhaps a district had exceeded their mana processing quota.
Upon reaching the hall, a mild frustration washed over him as he realized that this was the source of the commotion. Bustling with life, two other Toa, Nidak and Axus, had drawn a crowd of starstruck Matoran, clumsily flexing what little they could of their newly acquired abilities. It seemed Deimus needn't have been so cautious after all. Vothena, Stalakk, and Talus arrived shortly after, also attempting to keep a low profile until they saw the lively scene.
Greetings were exchanged between the Toa, and the thrilled Volkari dubbed them the Toa Volka. News of their transformation spread rapidly, prompting Volka Nui's finest craftsmen to design specialized tools and additional armour. The Toa Volka could not enjoy their newfound fame for long though; Xota's premonition, true or not, loomed over every moment, giving them the heavy weight of Volkerra's fate resting in their hands.
